Tade Pays du Levant began as an encounter between a geographer fascinated by history, and the Near East, at the crossroads of legendary civilizations. From this land bathed in tradition, he returned with a mythical olive oil and laurel oil soap that became known as the Pain d’Alep, a forefather to the more recent soap from Marseilles. With ecology and the ethics of fair trade at its core, each season from November to March, an ancient soap making tradition is perpetuated at the Aleppo Citadel.

Olives are stone ground between two giant millstones, soda is extracted from sea salt and the mix is then heated in massive cauldrons to which other precious oils and extracts are added. Poured directly onto a specially prepared floor and cut manually into cubes, the Pain d’Alep is then stacked into columns to dry and mature over a period of nine months in the open air, at the end of which the final aspect of the soap is revelaed. The range is inspired by the heat and steam of the “hammam” or Turkish Bath, and created by the expertise of local cratsmen whose skills are a vestige of bygone ages.
