KAHINA GIVING BEAUTY - MANUFACTURING.
Sustainability is the integration of economic, social and environmental spheres to: “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” – Wikipedia. The team at Kahina are dedicated to the protection and preservation of assets for the future. This includes the responsible management and stewardship of the lands, peoples, cultures, economies and traditions that they encounter, first doing no harm and hopefully improving these resources. In their efforts to highlight the Berber women as the real artisans behind the products, they’ve incorporated them into every possible aspect of the Kahina line; the package art is a collage of signatures from the typically illiterate Berber women of one of the cooperatives that founder Katharine Phillips L’Heureux collected in Morocco. The packaging is created from recycled materials and the bottles are made from recyclable violet glass, which also acts as a preservative for the natural ingredients in the Kahina products.

THE ARGAN FOREST: Argan oil is extracted from the nut of the argan (argania spinosa) tree, which grows only in the argan forests in the Southwest of Morocco. The argan forests cover approximately 1.5 million acres and form the Northern border of the Sahara Desert. The trees, which have resisted attempts at growing anywhere else in the world, thrive in the harsh desert soil and serve an important purpose in keeping the Sahara at bay. The forests have been threatened by extinction due to the encroachment of the desert, overgrazing and deforestation by the local population of shepherds and farmers. In 1999, the argan forest was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. A thriving local argan industry further protects the forests.
